Takeaway Racism Campaign
On 23 April 2005, Mi Gao Huang Chen, a Chinese takeaway owner was brutally murdered in a race attack by a gang of 22 youths in Wigan. This tragedy was the culmination of a long period of racial harassment suffered by Mi Gao which the police failed to take seriously until it was too late.
The police charged six white youths with murder. Unbelieveably, they also charged Mi Gao's partner, Eileen Jia, for daring to defend herself while attmpting to save her partner. Due to overwhelming public support and our ePetition campaign, the DPP decided to drop the charges against Eileen after the initial hearings.
The murder trial of the six youths began on 24 October 2005. Two pleaded guilty of murder before the trial started. A further two were found guilty of murder. Another pleaded guilty to the lesser offence of violent disorder, and the remaining youth was found not guilty. A further 7 youths pleaded guilty to various public order offences.
On 16 December 2004, the four who were guilty of murder were given prison sentences of between 8 and 10 years.
