Press Conference: Father and family condemn “scandalous” report into the murder of his two children

The father of murdered children Antoine and Keniece Ogunkoya, will condemn London Borough of Hackney’s Social Services report as “inaccurate, insensitive, inadequate and scandalous” at a press conference organised by the family tomorrow morning.(17th July 2008)

The report is an internal case review into the tragedy and was commissioned by the City & Hackney Local Safeguarding Children Board. It will be made public tomorrow morning but only as an Executive Summary.

The children were killed in horrific circumstances by their mother, Vivian Gamor, whilst living alone and suffering from a “serious mental illness” on 27th January last year, almost 18 months ago. The involvement of and “mismanagement” by the Social Services led to the children staying with her overnight. The mother was convicted of manslaughter as a result of diminished responsibility on 1st August 2007 at the Central Criminal Court.

Vacancy: Young People's Development Worker

The Monitoring Group has a vacancy for a Young People’s Development Worker to work on a sessional basis (£10 p/h – 15 hours p/w) for their Civil Rights Project based in Yorkshire.

The person is expected to have experience of working with young people and understanding of the impact of the “war on terror” and racism on Muslim and other BME communities in the region.

"State of Denial" - a report on racism against the UK Chinese community

Racial Harassment and violence have been a feature of the life of Chinese-speaking populations within England for many years. This has been exacerbated by the relative isolation and sparsity of the Chinese-speaking populations within the UK. So far, UK Chinese people’s experience of racial harassment and violence is yet to be fully researched. To date, no study has adopted a mixed method of research (incorporating both quantitative and qualitative approaches) to assess the nature and extent of UK Chinese people’s experiences of racial harassment and violence. This research project aims to take such an approach.

Chinese Student Drowns under Suspicious Circumstances

Tan-Li.jpgOn Tuesday 3 July 2007, Tan Li, a young nineteen year old Chinese student lost his life whilst swimming at the Southgate Leisure Centre. His parents want to know how it is possible for someone as young and fit and Li to loose his life minutes after stepping into a public swimming pool.

Chinese New Year Celebration Southampton 2008

A traditional lion dance accompanied by clattering drums and cymbals ushered in the year of the rat in Southampton on Sunday, 24 February 2008. The event at Turner Sims Hall, Southampton University was jointly organised by The Monitoring Group Min Quan and Chinese Student and Scholar Association of Southampton.

More than three hundreds Southampton University Chinese students, scholars and professors, lecturers came together for a lively Chinese New Year celebration. The Registrar and Chief Operating Officer of Southampton University Simon Higman, The secondary secretary of Chinese Embassy Hongzhi Sun, the Chief Inspector of Hampshire Constabulary Karen Scipio and Acting Deputy Communities Manager of Southampton City Council Eve Holmyard, the Chair of Chinese Association of Southampton Ping Hua and Min Quan DCLG project Coordinator Leiwen Chen attended this event.  

Programmes include the breathtaking acrobatics performance Ding Bei and Zhuan Tan, the colourful Chinese folk dance, the classical Zither and Er Hu musical instrumental ensemble, and the traditional Chinese style cross-talk. At that unforgettable exciting night, people were singing and cheering together to demonstrate the variety of Chinese culture and to share the harmony of our society
