Forum on Racial Violence and the Chinese Community
Tuesday 4th December 2007
Time: 6pm to 8pm
Venue: Swedenborg Hall, 20/21 Bloomsbury Way, London WC1A 2TH
Since 2000, Min Quan, a Chinese-led project of The Monitoring Group has helped hundreds of individual families and individuals suffering racial violence in the UK. These include victimisation of Chinese waiters in Chinatown, assaults on students in Southampton, a killing of Chinese take-away owner in Wigan and continued harassment and murders of Chinese DVD sellers in London.
However, in many of the cases the racial motive is never acknowledged by the authorities and indeed in others the Chinese victims are often treated as perpetrators and charged with criminal offences but thankfully, due to strong public campaigns some are acquitted in Court.
The Chinese community in the UK continues to be totally stereotyped ?as either the most successful in achieving education results or conversely as a secretive monolithic society rampant with criminal activity ? and perhaps more fundamentally remains marginalised or absent from Britain?s political and social landscape. What can be done to address the problem? How can we invigorate a rights-led agenda to ensure safety for victims or real participation of Chinese communities in our society?
Speakers include
Bobby Chan- Chair of Min Quan,
Ping Hua- Chair of Chinese Association of Southampton,
Lisa Mok Deputy Director of Wai Yin Womens Society,
Peter Herbert- Chair of MPS Race Hate Crimes Forum and
Leiwen Chen & Dilys Liu on DVD Sellers Safety Campaign.
